Winter Running Gear and Tips
If a treadmill is anathema to you, follow these winter running tips to stay warm and comfortable during winter jogs.
Head and Neck
Your mom was right: wear a hat. The right hat protects your head, plus if you get warmer as you run, you can always remove it. If a hat is too much, try an earband. Campus Den carries a wide range of college hats, including University of Michigan hats and Michigan State hats. Choose from knit college hats or fleece earbands to stay warm while you run.
Layer Your Core
Your upper body will warm up quickly as you run, but you’ll need extra layers when you first head out. What’s more, layers trap body heat, keeping you more comfortable.
You can start with a long-sleeve college tee. Campus Den carries college t-shirts for the University of Michigan, Michigan State and other Michigan universities.
Put on an insulating layer over your base layer. One of the best insulating layers is a fleece or hoodie, such as a college hoodie from Campus Den. We carry University of Michigan hoodies and Michigan State hoodies, all of which will keep you warm while you run.
Wind and Water-proof Outer Layer
This layer will protect you against wind and precipitation. A good idea is to choose this layer so that it has a zipper, allowing you to regulate your body temperature easily while you run.
Gloves and Mittens
Keep your fingers warm with gloves and mittens. Mittens are the better option on really cold days because your fingers can share their heat.
Your Legs
You don’t need as many layers on your lower body as you do for your core. Running tights are great for this, but you can also wear college sweatpants, such as our University of Michigan sweats and Michigan State sweats.
Your Feet
Wear your usual running shoes and choose moisture wicking socks made of fabrics such as acrylic or wool.
Although it’s cold, you can still run!
